Softball Starts SLIAC Play With Split at Blackburn
CARLINVILLE, Ill. – Eureka College senior catcher Cathy Kalnicky (Bolingbrook, Ill./Plainfield H.S.) belted her third home run of the 2010 season and 13th home run of her collegiate career, capping a six-run eighth inning and sending the Red Devils to a 7-4 win over Blackburn, Wednesday afternoon in Carlinville, Ill. The Beavers rallied to win game two, 8-7.
Facing a 1-0 deficit in the seventh inning of game one, the Red Devils forced a 1-1 tie and extra innings when sophomore outfielder Allie Trainer (Manito, Ill./Midwest Central H.S.) singled home senior Amy Scammahorn (Decatur, Ill./Warrensburg-Latham H.S./Parkland), who had reached base on an error earlier in the inning.
Eureka scored six times in the top of the eighth inning for a commanding 7-1 lead. Freshman outfielder Lauren Kao (Normal, Ill./Normal Community H.S.) and Scammahorn hit RBI singles before Kalnicky extended her own Eureka home run record with a grand slam for a 7-1 lead.
Blackburn rallied in the bottom half of the eighth, promptly loading the bases before Grace Young hit a two-run single to trim the Blackburn deficit to 7-3. Kariann Hill later scored on a Eureka error, but Blackburn’s Lauren Woelfel lined into a double play to end the game with a 7-4 Eureka win.
Sophomore shortstop Carissa Alig (Metamora, Ill./Metamora H.S.) paced the Eureka offense with a 3-for-5 effort. Scammahorn also had a multi-hit game with a 2-for-4 showing. Senior pitcher Kelsey Brandt (Morton, Ill./Morton H.S.) earned her second win of the season, allowing only two earned runs on two hits through 8.0 innings. She struck out 10.
Eureka forced a 1-1 tie in the first inning of game two behind an RBI groundout from Kalnicky. The Red Devils scored five more runs in the second inning. Sophomore Sarah Jesse (Mackinaw, Ill./Bloomington H.S.) and senior Jill Doty (Metamora, Ill./Metamora H.S./Illinois Central) recorded RBIs in the inning before Kao smacked a three-run home run, her first collegiate home run. Eureka ended the inning with a 6-2 lead.
Blackburn countered with a six-run fifth inning to jump in front, 8-6. The first four batters of the inning reached base for the Beavers, who stole four bases and took advantage of a Eureka error during the inning. Jordan Chapman delivered a two-run double to break a 6-6 tie.
The Red Devils will return home to host Westminster in a SLIAC doubleheader on Friday at 3 p.m. in Eureka.
