Dunne, Jesse Sweep Weekly SLIAC Softball Awards
CHESTERFIELD, Mo. – The Eureka College softball team swept the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball Player of the Week awards, according to an announcement from the league office late Monday night. Junior second baseman Kelli Dunne (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods H.S./Illinois Central) was chosen as the SLIAC Hitter of the Week, and junior starter Sarah Jesse (Mackinaw, Ill./Bloomington H.S.) was selected as the SLIAC Pitcher of the Week.
The SLIAC Hitter of the Week award is the second for Dunne this season. The first-year transfer went 6-for-7 for an .857 average last Wednesday in a SLIAC doubleheader sweep of MacMurray. She added a double, triple and two runs scored while driving in three. Defensively, Dunne was perfect in 11 defensive chances from second base.
Dunne’s performance against the Highlanders bumped her season batting average to a team-best .354 (28-for-79). She also owns the team lead in doubles (six), triples (four), slugging percentage (.646) and on-base percentage (.414). Her three home runs already rank tied for ninth in program history.
Jesse needed only 89 pitches to throw her 32nd career complete-game in Eureka’s 5-1 victory over MacMurray in game one last Wednesday. She scattered three hits and allowed only one earned run while striking out three and walking none. The SLIAC Pitcher of the Week award is the first of her career and first for the Red Devils since Kelsey Brandt earned the honor on March 23, 2009.
The Red Devils (6-20, 3-7 SLIAC) will return to SLIAC action Wednesday in a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Blackburn in Carlinville, Ill.
