hamilton's Slam Highlights Wednesday Softball Split
NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Eureka College senior center fielder Sara Hamilton hit a sixth-inning grand slam, part of a 4-for-4 showing with seven RBI in the Red Devils’ 14-3 rout of Suffolk (Mass.) at the National Collegiate Sports Invitational in North Myrtle Beach, S.C., Wednesday afternoon. Eureka closed the afternoon with a 12-0 loss in five innings to Lycoming (Pa.).
The Red Devils (1-5) jumped out in front of the Rams in the opener, plating a pair of runs in the top of the first inning for a 2-0 advantage. Hamilton’s double to deep center field, coupled with a botched relay throw by the Rams’ defense, allowed senior third baseman Carissa Alig (Metamora, Ill./Metamora H.S.) to score from first base for the first run of the game. Junior second baseman Kelli Dunne (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods H.S./Illinois Central) followed with an RBI single to score Hamilton for the 2-0 advantage.
Suffolk (2-3) cut its deficit in half in the bottom half of the inning on Karina Bolster’s RBI single, but the Red Devils got the run back in the top of the third when junior shortstop Jaylynn Stewart (Taylorville, Ill./Tayorville H.S.) led off with a single and later scored on Hamilton’s infield RBI single. EC left fielder Ashley Segerstrom (LeRoy, Ill./LeRoy H.S.) made it 4-1 one inning later when she scored from third base after Bolster’s errant throw on a stolen base attempt at second base.
The EC lead dwindled to 4-3 after a two-run fourth-inning from the Rams. The Red Devils answered with their best two-inning stretch of the young season, exploding for 10 runs over the final two frames for a 14-3 win. A pair of singles and an error in the sixth inning loaded the bases for Hamilton, who deposited the first pitch of her at-bat over the left field fence for her second home run in as many days. Segerstrom, Stewart, Hamilton and Dunne tacked on run-scoring hits as part of a six-run seventh inning to close the scoring.
Stewart, Dunne and Segerstrom joined Hamilton as Red Devils to have multi-hit games. The Red Devils banged out 16 hits as a team in the win. Junior starting pitcher Sarah Jesse (Mackinaw, Ill./Bloomington H.S.) earned her first victory of the season in the circle, yielding only one earned run on nine hits over 7.0 innings. She struck out four.
In game two, Lycoming (5-1) broke a scoreless tie in the second inning on Janelle Poorman’s solo home run to left field. The Warriors scored two more in the third before an eight-run fourth inning opened up an 11-0 advantage. Lycoming took advantage of five Eureka errors during the contest, as only six of the Warriors’ 12 runs were earned.
Stewart and Alig recorded hits for EC in the nightcap. Lycoming starter Brie Braga struck out seven through 5.0 innings to earn the complete-game shutout.
The Red Devils will close their eight-game stretch in North Myrtle Beach on Thursday. Eureka will play Philadelphia Biblical at 8:30 a.m. CT before a 2:30 p.m. CT matchup with Arcadia. AU beat the Red Devils on Tuesday, 1-0.
