Rhodes Blanks Red Devils in Memphis, 10-0
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Playing for the second time on Sunday, the Eureka College softball team yielded eight runs in the first inning and eventually fell to host Rhodes, 10-0, during the final day of the Cici's Pizza Spring Break Challenge in Memphis, Tenn.
Rhodes starting pitcher Sara Bowen tossed a one-hit shutout for the Lynx to earn the victory. Eureka junior second baseman Tomi Tapper (East Peoria, Ill./East Peoria H.S.) broke up Bowen's no-hit bid with a base hit to right field in Eureka's final at-bat. The game was stopped via the eight-run rule in the fifth inning.
Eureka senior Jill Doty (Metamora, Ill./Metamora H.S.) came on in relief in the circle with nobody out in the third inning and retired six straight Rhodes batters in her first pitching appearance since April 19, 2008 at Maryville (Mo.).
The Red Devils are scheduled to depart Memphis Monday morning for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Rust in Holly Springs, Miss.
