Phelan, Wetterauer reach finals at liberal arts championships
The Eureka College swim season came to a close last weekend at the annual Liberal Arts Championships hosted by Coe College. The event featured competition for three days from top teams from the Midwest.
Two Red Devils qualified individually for the finals after strong swims in preliminary races. Aaron Phelan qualified for the finals in the men's 100 yard breaststroke with the 16th best time of 1:14.78, then posted a season-best time of 1:11.54 in the finals to take 13th place in the finals.
In the women's 50 freestyle, Eureka's Natalie Wetterauer came in 13th out of 46 entries with a time of 26.90. It was a season-low time, more than a full minute quicker than her first time in the opening meet of the season.
The rest of the EC squad had personal bests nearly across the board. Alyssa Wetterauer took 26th out of 46 in the women's 50 free, while Kelsey Hale was 22nd in the 200 yard individual medley. Others setting season-bests on the women's side were Emma Benjamin (500 free), Elisa Peters (50, 100 and 200 free), Stephanie Hospelhorn (100 and 200 free) and Sarah Little (100, 200 and 500 free). The Eureka 200 yard relay team of Alyssa Wetterauer, Hale, Benjamin and Natalie Wetterauer had its best time of the year as well.
Joining Phelan with season low times on the men's team were John Isom (200 IM, 400 IM, 100 free), Blair Steffens (100 free), Patrick Howard (50 free, 200 backstroke), and Randy Dunn (100 backstroke, backstroke, 200 IM).
Eureka swimming team awards will be announced by head coach Jane Austin at the annual E-Tribe Winter Sports Banquet Sunday, March 1 at 1:00 pm in the Terrill Rooms of the Cerf Center.
