Eureka Swimming Opens Campaign at Knox
GALESBURG, Ill. – Eureka College sophomore Zach Ahrends (Graymont, Ill./Pontiac H.S.) kicked off his second collegiate swimming season on a high note, claiming victories in the 50-yard freestyle and the 50-yard breaststroke to lead the Red Devils in a dual meet against Knox at Lay Natatorium, Saturday afternoon in Galesburg, Ill. The Prairie Fire won the women’s dual, 184-37, and also claimed the men’s dual by a score of 128-53.
Ahrends won the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 27.19 seconds, beating teammate and runner-up Grant Madden (Germantown Hills, Ill./Metamora H.S.) by less than a second. His final time of 34.00 seconds won the 50-yard breaststroke, topping Knox’s Nick Polizos by 1.08 seconds.
On the women’s side, newcomers Lauren Schwanke (Eureka, Ill./Eureka H.S.) and Kate West (Louisville, Ky./Assumption H.S.) each recorded a pair of runner-up finishes to lead the Red Devils. Schwanke finished second in the 50-yard freestyle (28.04) and 100-yard freestyle (1:03.41), while West was the runner-up in the 200-yard individual medley (2:41.61) and 50-yard butterfly (30.89).
The Red Devils will return to competition next Saturday at the Monmouth Invitational in Monmouth, Ill. The event is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
