Red Devils Claim Eight Top-3 Finishes at Sprint Meet

Cody Leach

EUREKA, Ill. – The Eureka College swim team earned a total of eight top-3 finishes, including a 1-meter diving victory for sophomore Cody Leach (Pontiac, Ill./Pontiac H.S.), as the Red Devils hosted five schools from NCAA Division III and the USCAA at the annual Eureka Sprint Meet, Saturday afternoon at the Reagan Center.  Knox swept the men’s and women’s team titles.

Leach earned a score of 221.00 in 1-meter diving event, more than doubling the score of runner-up John Hoefert of Illinois College to earn Eureka’s lone event victory of the afternoon.  Leach also placed third in the 50-yard butterfly in a time of 27.21 seconds.  Sophomore Zach Ahrends (Graymont, Ill./Pontiac H.S.) was the runner-up in the 50-yard breaststroke in 31.83 seconds, and freshman Colton Lott (Ada, Okla./Ada H.S.) earned third place in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 2:11.87 to give the Eureka men a total of four top-3 performances.

Sophomore Kate West (Louisville, Ky./Assumption H.S.) paced the women’s squad, finishing among the top-3 in two different events.  She earned second place in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 30.12 seconds, finishing just 0.03 seconds behind winner Bess Cooley of Knox.  West placed third in the 50-yard breaststroke in a time of 37.14 seconds.

The Red Devils also fared well in mixed relays, earning a pair of top-3 finishes.  The mixed 200-yard medley relay team of Lauren Schwanke (Eureka, Ill./Eureka H.S.), Ahrends, West and Leach clocked in at 2:01.89 for a runner-up finish.  The same EC group also placed third in the mixed 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:49.18, less than two seconds behind Principia’s winning team.

Eureka will return to action on Saturday in a triangular meet against Illinois College and Knox in Jacksonville, Ill.
