Wetterauer, Leach Pace Red Devils at Season Opener
MONMOUTH, Ill. -- Eureka College senior Natalie Wetterauer (Washington, Ill./Washington H.S.) recorded a trio of top-eight finishes, including a fifth place showing in the 100-yard butterfly, to lead the Red Devils in their season-opening competition at the Monmouth Invitational in Monmouth, Ill., Saturday afternoon.
Wetterauer missed a career-best time in the 100-yard butterfly by .13 seconds. She placed fifth in the race with a time of 1:08.53. She was sixth in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 27.61 seconds and eighth in the 100-yard freestyle with a career-best time of 59.84 seconds, the fifth-fastest time in the event in school history.
Sophomore Sara Dvorsky (Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame H.S.) also participated in multiple events for the women’s team, earning a new career-best time of 33.25 seconds for an 18th place finish in the 50-yard freestyle. She also set a new career-best in the 100-yard freestyle, earning 18th place in 1:15.73.
On the men’s side, freshman newcomer Cody Leach (Pontiac, Ill./Pontiac H.S.) turned in the top Eureka performance in three different events. He placed fourth in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:05.31, ninth in the 50-yard freestyle in 24.88 seconds and 10th in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 56.39 seconds. Freshman Ethan Minich (Peoria, Ill./Woodruff H.S.), another newcomer, also competed in multiple events and gave the Red Devils their best performance in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:11.44 for ninth place.
Lake Forest claimed the women’s team title with 521 points, while Loras won the men’s crown with 587.5 points.
Eureka will return to the pool this Saturday at the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational at 1 p.m. in Bloomington, Ill.
