wetterauer Wins Two at Eureka Sprint Meet
EUREKA, Ill. – Eureka College senior Natalie Wetterauer (Washington, Ill./Washington H.S.) continued her solid senior season Saturday, taking first place in the 100-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly during the annual Eureka College Sprint Meet at the Reagan Center. Eureka freshman Cody Leach (Pontiac, Ill./Pontiac H.S.) led the men’s team with a victory in 1-meter diving. Principia claimed the men’s and women’s team titles.
Wetterauer was the only competitor in the 13-person 100-yard freestyle to eclipse the 1-minute mark, as her time of 59.90 seconds was a career-best. She later won the 100-yard butterfly, clocking in at 1:09.11, and claimed second place in the 50-yard butterfly in a time of 30.38 seconds. Eureka freshman Heather Kentzel (Mackinaw, Ill./Peoria Christian H.S.) also earned a runner-up finish on Saturday, placing second in the 100-yard breaststroke in 55.09 seconds.
The Eureka men dominated the meet’s lone diving event. Leach received a score of 229.40 in the 1-meter dive, while freshman Zach Ahrends (Graymont, Ill./Pontiac H.S.) was the runner-up with a score of 121.40. Leach and senior Aaron Phelan (Eureka, Ill./Eureka H.S.) each placed second to earn the top Eureka performance in swim events. Leach was the runner-up in the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 31.67 seconds, while Phelan swam the 50-yard breaststroke in 32.74 seconds.
The Red Devils will be back in the pool Saturday, traveling to Jacksonville, Ill. to compete in an event against host Illinois College and Knox.
