Downs wins javelin, high jump in final meet of season

RIVER FOREST, Ill. — The Eureka track and field team concluded its season at the Cougar Invitational hosted by Concordia University Chicago Friday.

Kim Downs (Kewanee, Ill./HS) led the way for the Red Devils with an impressive effort in the women's javelin.  Down's toss of 112' won the event over 10 other participants, leaving her just five feet from the Eureka school record of 117-4 set by Penny Robbins in 1980 and less than 15 feet from NCAA provisional qualification status.  Downs also tied for the best high jump on the day at 5', which also set a season high mark.  She additionally came with two feet of the EC record in the triple jump with a season best and third place effort of 31-5.25.

Mary Ackerman (Morton, Ill./HS) led three Red Devils in the women's 1500, while Tina Brattin (Bradley, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) and Miranda Brozak (Streator, Ill./HS) each set season best times in the same event.

Wayne O'Harrow (Crete, Ill./Bloom Trail) took sixth in the men's triple jump with a season best performance of 39-11.25.  He was also second place in the 110 hurdles.

Jordan Vignoni (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz Hill) placed 11th out of 18 competitors in the men's shot put with a heave of 36-4.25.

Eureka track coach Jimmy Duke will announce his team awards at the E-Tribe Individual Spring Sports Banquet sat for 6:30 pm Tuesday, April 29 in the Cerf Center.
