Red Devils improve, but fall short vs. Scots

Exactly one year later, the Eureka College women's basketball team showed marked improvement versus the Monmouth College Fighting Scots (6-4), but EC shot just 23 percent in the second half in falling 70-52 in the final non-conference game of the regular season. The Red Devils are now 2-6 and will play their next 16 games against league foes. Monmouth defeated Eureka 81-36 on January 3, 2006.

Playing their first game in three weeks, the Red Devils hardly looked rusty in the first half. Eureka shot 48 percent (14-29) from the field in the opening stanza, leading by as many as six points with four minutes before intermission. Monmouth finished the half on a 9-2 run, however, and went into halftime up 32-31 following a Lindsey Emmons bank shot just before the horn.

The Scots, who had a decided height advantage, took the lead for good with 17:23 remaining on an Emmons three-pointer. Monmouth grabbed a 32-14 rebounding margin in the second half.

Lisa Ghighi (Oglesby, Ill./LaSalle-Peru) and Nicole Fisher (Canton, Ill./HS) scored on back-to-back possessions to cut Monmouth's lead to 43-41, but EC went nearly 10 minutes before making its next field goal as the Scots mounted a 17-2 charge that put the game out of reach.

Eureka had its most successful three-point shooting game of the season, connecting on 5-of-11 from long range for 46 percent. Brittany Gardner (Mooresville, Ill./HS) led the Red Devils in that regard by canning four of her nine attempts. Gardner, who finished with 16 points and three assists, is just nine treys away from the top spot on Eureka's career made three-pointers list.

Fisher posted her eighth double digit scoring effort in as many games this season with 15 points. She also led EC with nine boards and four steals. Ghighi also had four steals. Brandi Payne (Eureka, Ill./HS) played her first game in a Red Devils uniform, adding seven points off the bench.

Elise Waldorf led four Scots in double figures with 18. Ashley Yeast pulled down 13 rebounds, seven offensive, helping Monmouth to an 18-5 edge in second chance points.

Eureka will host Maryville University Saturday, January 6 at 1:00 pm. The Saints have a 44-game St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference winning streak. The men's game will follow at approximately 3:00 pm.
