Red Devils torch Angels with 2nd half defense
Shelby Naab (Beecher City, Ill./HS) recorded her first collegiate double-double and Nicole Fisher (Canton, Ill./HS) had her fourth of the season as the Eureka College women's basketball team blazed past Lincoln Christian College (2-7, 0-4) 54-38. The win moves the Red Devils (3-7, 2-2 SLIAC) back to .500 in conference play.
Fisher tallied a game-high 16 points on just seven field goal attempts. She combined with Naab for 21 rebounds to help Eureka to a 45-34 edge on the boards. But what really enabled the Red Devils to win was their second half defense. They forced 19 turnovers, holding the Angels to just two fields goals and seven points after halftime.
Lincoln Christian led for a majority of the opening half. The largest EC deficit came 10 minutes into game at 15-9. Late in the half, Brandi Payne (Eureka, Ill./HS) contributed seven points off the bench during a 14-5 flurry by Eureka as EC went ahead by six. Jessica Blythe trimmed the lead in half with a three-pointer on the last possession making the score 34-31 at intermission.
Five different Angels made a three-pointer in the first half as 21 of Lincoln Christian's 31 points came from three-pointers. The second half, however, was a much different story with Lincoln Christian misfiring on all nine attempts behind the arc.
While the Red Devils were able to keep the Angels scoreless for over seven minutes to begin the half, they were not able to take advantage. After a Kari Otto foul shot, Eureka's lead was just 38-36 with 10 minutes to play. That is when EC seized control with numerous free throws and lay ups, ending the game on a 16-2 run.
Eureka led 20-8 in bench scoring paced by 12 points from Payne. She also added six boards, five steals and three assists. Naab's 10 rebounds to go with her 11 points are a career high. EC shot 36 percent (19-53) in the game compared to 25 percent (13-52) for Lincoln Christian.
Bobbie Larson scored 15 to lead the Angels. Sarah Godwin matched Larson with six rebounds and dished out five assists.
The Red Devils will be on the road for a pair of league contests this weekend. They play at Webster University Friday, January 12 at 6:00 pm and Westminster College the following afternoon at 1:00 pm.
