Eureka nets 2nd consecutive W behind Fisher's 27
The Eureka College women's basketball team won its 400th game in program history Friday night 65-59 over St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Webster University (3-9, 3-2 SLIAC). The Red Devils are now 400-332 all-time.
Eureka was led to victory by the dominant interior play of Nicole Fisher (Canton, Ill./HS), Mandi Sistek (S. Wilmington, Ill./Gardner-S. Wilmington) and Shelby Naab (Beecher City, Ill./HS). Fisher nearly doubled every other player in the game with 27 points on 10-of-13 shooting. Sistek had a game-high 12 rebounds in addition to nine points, while Naab also just missed a double-double with 12 points and nine boards.
After scoring on its first possession, Webster would not lead again for the rest of the night. Fisher recorded 11 points in the first five minutes as EC rocketed out to a 13-4 lead. The Red Devils, who are averaging 12.8 offensive rebounds per game, grabbed 12 offensive boards in the first half alone, but they were unable to expand on their nine-point cushion thanks in part to 0-for-9 three-point shooting. Webster tallied the final four points of the half to climb to within 31-27 at intermission.
Just after halftime, Sistek converted a three-point play and Fisher pitched in two more buckets to give Eureka its largest lead at 40-29 with 15:26 remaining. The Red Devils were ahead 52-46 with eight minutes to play when they went scoreless for three and a half minutes allowing Webster to tie the game
Eureka took the lead for good with 3:34 to go on a pair of Fisher free throws. That began a 6-0 run that put EC in front 60-54 heading into the final minute and a half. Naab had a late field goal and two foul shots to seal the win.
The Red Devils were credited with 19 assists on 26 made field goals led by the six dishes of Kim Holdenrid (Mendota, Ill./HS). EC also enjoyed a 49-35 edge in rebounding and shot a sparkling 60 percent (12-20) after halftime.
Erin Chesnek led four Gorloks in double figures with 15. Webster shot 35 percent (23-66) for the game.
