A Fish story: 29 pts, 15 reb, EC wins 3rd of 4
Nicole Fisher (Canton, Ill./HS) scored 29 points a pulled down 15 rebounds to lead the Eureka College women's basketball team to a 63-51 victory over visiting MacMurray College (3-10, 3-4 SLIAC) Tuesday night. The win is the Red Devils' (5-8, 4-3 SLIAC) third in four games. The 15 boards sets a new career mark for Fisher, which she set at 13 earlier this season in a game versus Knox.
MacMurray led for the final time at 11-10 just over eight minutes into the game. The Red Devils would soon mount a 10-0 run spurred on by eight points from Fisher to take a 24-13 lead with five minutes before halftime. Brandi Payne (Eureka, Ill./HS) and Brittany Gardner (Mooresville, Ind./HS) added baskets late in the frame to keep EC ahead 28-19 at intermission.
The Highlanders climbed back to within eight with 17 minutes left, but could get no closer. The Red Devils used runs of 9-2 and 8-0 to build a 17-point lead (51-34) at the seven minute mark eliminating any thoughts of a MacMurray comeback.
Fisher made 13 out of her 22 field goal attempts. Many times, she was the recipient of sharp passes from her teammates as Eureka recorded 20 assists on 27 made field goals. Lisa Ghighi (Oglesby, Ill./LaSalle-Peru) and Kim Holdenrid (Mendota, Ill./HS) picked up six and four assists respectively. The Red Devils dominated the paint, outscoring the Highlanders 38-12 and tallying a 41-31 edge on the boards.
Payne had 10 points and six rebounds off the bench for the Red Devils, who held their fourth consecutive opponent below 37 percent shooting. Eureka shot 45 percent (27-60) from the field and 73 percent (8-11) at the charity stripe.
Taylor Volmer led MacMurray with 15 points and eight rebounds. The visitors outscored Eureka 21-3 behind the three-point arc, but shot just 26 percent in the first half and 35 percent (19-55) for the game.
The Red Devils conclude their brief two-game homestand Saturday, January 20 with a match up with SLIAC rival Greenville College. The women's game is slated for a 1:00 pm tip-off with the men's game to follow at 3:00 pm.
