Eureka topped by Maryville despite Fisher's 29 pts

Red Devils forward Nicole Fisher (Canton, Ill./HS) went over 500 rebounds in her Eureka College (7-12, 6-7 SLIAC) career en route to her 10th double-double of the season in a 95-58 loss to Maryville University (15-5, 13-0) on St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball play Saturday. The junior recorded game-highs of 29 points and 11 boards, giving her 505 rebounds in under three seasons of action.

After falling behind 19-4, the Red Devils hung tough for the next 12 minutes. Eureka went on an 8-0 rally to get within 31-18 with 6:46 on the clock, but the Saints pushed ahead with a 12-4 run to close the half up 46-24.

Eureka played nearly even with the league leading Saints for the first eight minutes after halftime only to see Courtney Bergheger tally seven points during a 12-1 Maryville spurt to push the lead up to 81-46. The Saints enjoyed a 46-2 edge in points off turnovers and outscored EC 32-13 at the free throw line. Both squads shot 40 percent from the field on the day.

Brandi Payne (Eureka, Ill./HS) added eight points off the Eureka bench. Lisa Ghighi (Oglesby, Ill./LaSalle-Peru) also came off the bench with five points, six boards and six assists. Mandi Sistek (S. Wilmington, Ill./Gardner-S. Wilmington) was the team's second leading rebounder with eight.

Megan McCabe led the Saints, who have won 55 consecutive regular season conference games, with 18 points.

The Red Devils trail Greenville College by two games for the final SLIAC Tournament spot with five games to play. Their next game is at MacMurray College, Tuesday, February 6 at 8:00 pm. Eureka defeated the Highlanders 63-51 at home on January 16. The EC/MacMurray men's game is slated for 6:00 pm.
