EC holds on vs. Webster, now 8-7 in SLIAC
The Red Devil women's basketball team made its six point halftime lead hold up in a 53-47 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over Webster University (5-17, 5-10 SLIAC) Friday night. Eureka (9-12, 8-7 SLIAC) was led by Mandi Sistek (S. Wilmington, Ill./Gardner-S. Wilmington), who scored 10 first half points and Nicole Fisher (Canton, Ill./HS), who grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds.
Eureka was 2-for-2 from three-point land in the opening stanza. Both treys came from Brittany Gardner (Mooresville, Ind./HS) in the first four minutes of the contest as EC jumped in front 10-2. Despite making just three out of 10 free throw attempts in the half, Webster slowly melted away the Eureka advantage and Danielle Tiller's five straight points moved Webster ahead for the only time on the night 19-18 with 2:18 left in the frame. Aided by six points from Sistek, the Red Devils responded quickly with a 10-3 run to close the half up 28-22.
The Gorloks scored the first five points on the second half to close to within one, but that only heightened the Red Devils' resistence as Webster went nearly 10 minutes without a field goal. Eureka marched ahead by the score of 44-30 with 9:19 to go thanks to a 14-2 run fueled by nine points from Fisher over a span of six minutes.
Fisher, Sistek and Kim Holdenrid (Mendota, Ill./HS) each sank two free throws to offset a pair of Webster three-pointers. Brandi Payne (Eureka, Ill./HS) added another foul shot with 3:53 remaining to put EC ahead 51-40. But just as it seemed EC would keep the Gorloks at bay for the balance of the game, Webster mounted a final rally.
The Gorloks went on a 7-0 run, slicing the Red Devils' lead to four (51-47) at the 1:45 mark. Eureka ran down the clock on the next possession before Fisher knifed through the defense to put back an offensive rebound. Webster missed its final five shots of the game and neither team scored in the last minute of play.
Fisher tallied a game-high 21 points. The junior forward, who has registered a double-double in eight of her last nine outings, went over the 900 point plateau for her career. Sistek finished with 13 points and eight boards, going 7-for-9 at the charity stripe. Holdenrid added six points and seven caroms as Eureka pulled down a 47-38 advantage on the boards. The Red Devils shot 35 percent (18-51) for the game, making 2-of-4 from long range and 15-of-25 (60 percent) at the line.
Julie McGirl paced Webster with 13 points, Erin Chesnek had 12 rebounds and six assists. The Gorloks struggles from the field (30 percent, 18-for-61) extended to behind the arc (20 percent, 3-for-15) and to the foul line (44 percent, 8-for-18).
Eureka has a quick turnaround as Westminster College comes to town Saturday, February 10 for a 1:00 pm tip-off. The Blue Jays had their way with EC in the first match up on January 13, 63-55.
