3rd time's a charm: Eureka ends week 3-0
Tough defense and persistent team rebounding were key ingredients in brewing up the Eureka College women's basketball team's chance to go for its first three game winning streak of the season. It was those same factors that bubbled to the surface Saturday as the Red Devils (10-12, 9-7 SLIAC) won for the third time in five days, this time 53-44 over Westminster College (7-15, 5-10 SLIAC) in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.
Just as she had done the previous night versus Webster, Brittany Gardner (Mooresville, Ind./HS) accounted for all of Eureka's 2-for-2 shooting from three-point territory before halftime with two treys in the first four minutes of the game helping EC to a quick 10-3 lead. The Red Devils' lead reached double figures at 15-5 after Nicole Fisher (Canton, Ill./HS) tallied five consecutive points. The junior amassed a game-high 21 in the game, including 14 in the first half. Fisher and Gardner were responsible for Eureka's last nine points of the frame, helping EC to a 31-17 advantage at the break.
The Red Devils matched their largest lead of 16 points on four occasions in the second half. The last time came with 2:02 remaining following two of Shelby Naab's (Beecher City, Ill./HS) 14 points. Westminster cut the EC lead under 10 for the first time after halftime with 34 seconds on the clock. The Blue Jays got as close as 51-44 thanks to a 10-1 rally that ended with only 16 seconds left.
The Red Devils held the opposition below 40 percent shooting for the fifth consecutive game. They also have not been out-rebounded in seven straight outings after earning a 38-28 edge on the boards versus Westminster. Westminster totaled just one second chance point in the game. Five EC players grabbed at least four caroms led by nine from Fisher. Naab and Mandi Sistek (S. Wilmington, Ill./Gardner-S. Wilmington) had six apiece. Gardner led EC with six assists and three steals in addition to her eight points. Eureka shot 44 percent (21-48) overall and 29 percent (2-7) on three-point attempts.
Whitney Meurer led the Blue Jays with 10 points. Markie England pulled down five rebounds in just 15 minutes to lead her team before fouling out with 9:35 to play. Westminster was held to 33 percent (16-49) from the field and 15 percent (2-13) behind the arc.
Once Saturday's game concluded, The Red Devils became big Westminster fans as Eureka needs to win its two final regular season games and have Westminster defeat Greenville Feb. 20 for a chance to make the conference tournament. Eureka has a full week to prepare for its next game Saturday, February 17 at Greenville College. EC outlasted the Panthers 63-59 in overtime January 20. Game time is set for 1:00 pm with the men's game to follow at 3:00 pm.
