Cold 1st half freezes Red Devils vs. Elmhurst
A cold shooting first half proved to be too much to overcome as the Eureka College women's basketball team fell in its season opener 72-57 to the Elmhurst College Blue Jays. The Red Devils will play Johnson & Wales University of Providence, Rhode Island in the consolation game of the Elmhurst Tournament Saturday, Nov. 18 at 1:00 pm.
Eureka dug itself a deep 38-20 hole at intermission after sinking just 3-of-26 field goal attempts in the first 20 minutes. The Red Devils gained a giant advantage at the foul line, attempting 24 free throws to Elmhurst's 8, but EC made just 50 percent of its free throws. Still, it was the quantity of free throws that kept Eureka even remotely close. The Red Devils did not score their first field goal until almost 13 minutes into the game.
Elmhurst eventually pulled ahead by as many as 24 points, taking a 45-21 lead with 18:34 remaining. Eureka slowly chipped away at the deficit, but still trailed by 19 before catching fire with just over six minutes to play.
Junior Brittany Gardner (Mooresville, Ind./HS), who led EC with 15 points on the night, ignited a 13-0 run with a three-pointer. Melissa Runge's (Loda, Ill./Paxton-Buckley-Loda) basket with just under three minutes to go brought EC within 60-54.
While the Red Devils improved from the field, making 12-of-24 second half shots, they continued to struggle from the line. Eureka missed 10 more free throws in the second half to end up 19-41 (46.3 percent) for the game. Those missed opportunities ultimately crushed the Red Devils' chances. The Blue Jays closed the game on a 12-3 run after EC had cut their lead to six to win by 15.
Sophomore Shelby Naab (Beecher City, Ill./HS) scored 12 points in the second half, more than she scored in any full game last season, to finish with 14. Nicole Fisher (Canton, Ill./HS) tied Naab for team-high honors with eight rebounds and added 11 points. Gardner and Kim Holdenrid (Mendota, Ill./HS) combined to go 4-of-6 on three-pointers in the second half.
Brittany Bobruk helped Elmhurst to a 54-43 rebounding advantage with 18 alone, while matching teammate Candice Sutton with 20 points. The Blue Jays had five players with at least four fouls. Calvin College defeated Johnson & Wales 58-46 in game one of the tournament. Elmhurst will play Calvin for the title at 3:00 pm.
