Fisher (32 pts, 13 reb), Red Devils reel in 1st win
Nicole Fisher (Canton, Ill./HS) got an early start on her Thanksgiving feast, devouring the Prairie Fire defense to the tune of 32 points and 13 rebounds as Eureka College defeated Knox College 72-58 Tuesday night at the Reagan Center. It is the first victory of the season for the Red Devils, who are now 1-2. Knox is 0-1.
Eureka jumped in front 11-0 and never trailed. Fisher had eight of those 11 points in the first four minutes of the contest. She made 14-of-19 field goal attempts on the night and all four foul shots. It was more of a team effort than the scoring column may indicate, however. Many times, she was the beneficiary of her teammates's ability to break Knox's press and beat the defense back. The Red Devils recorded 17 assists on their 28 baskets and owned a 16-4 edge in fast break points.
The EC defense was a dominant unit if the opening half, limiting the Prairie Fire to 12 points and 10.3 percent (3-29) from the floor. Eureka led 27-12 at the break despite only scoring two field goals in the last eight and a half minutes.
The final margin of 14 points was as close as Knox would get the rest of the night. The Red Devils' largest lead was 27 points (63-36) with 5:30 to play. Knox ended the game on a 22-9 run.
Shelby Naab (Beecher City, Ill./HS) tallied her second double figure scoring game of the season with 13. She and Mandi Sistek (S. Wilmington, Ill./Gardner-S. Wilmington) each pulled down seven boards to help EC to a 47-38 rebounding advantage. Brittany Gardner (Mooresville, Ind./HS) and Kim Downs (Kewanee, Ill./HS) combined for nine of Eureka's 14 steals. EC missed all seven three-point attempts, but had a 50-20 advantage in points in the paint.
Erin Navolio scored 14 points to lead Knox. She had 12 in the second half, where the Prairie Fire had 46 of their 58 points.
Eureka's next game is on the road versus Illinois Wesleyan University Tuesday, Nov. 28 at 7:00 pm.
