Greenville turns away Clarke by 20 in EC Classic

The Greenville College Panthers (2-2) withstood several second half runs by the Clarke College Crusaders (0-6) to take the first game of the EC Classic 61-41.

Greenville trailed 13-9 before assuming control of the game in the first half. Clarke scored just three points over the final 11 minutes of the opening frame, allowing Greenville an avenue for a 17-3 run and a 26-16 halftime lead. The Panthers were 10-16 (63 percent) at the line, while Clarke was a cold 2-9 (22 percent).

After seeing their advantage cut to six early in the second half, the Panthers extended it back up to 18
(42-24) following back-to-back treys by Tricia Frost and Natalie Lappe.

The Crusaders refused to die easy, however. Lauren Johnson ignited an 11-2 run with five straight points to cut Clarke's deficit to nine with 7:13 to play. But the Crusaders missed their next five shots and Greenville scored the next nine points to ice the game.

Trisha Draege was named to the All-EC Classic Team after leading the Panthers with nine rebounds and adding nine points. Johnson represented Clarke on the team. She led her team with 13 points and six assists.
