EC closes 2006 on 18-3 run, 8 point loss to Griffins
Eureka College battled Fontbonne University, one of the favorites to win this year's SLIAC women's basketball title, Wednesday night, but came up on the short end of a 72-64 decision on the road. The Red Devils fall to 2-5, 1-1 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while the Griffins improve to 3-4, 2-0 SLIAC.
Eureka junior Brittany Gardner (Mooresville, Ind./HS) connected on two three-pointers as EC overcame 16 first half turnovers for a 31-30 lead at intermission. Eureka led 14-7 early and did not trail until Fontbonne went on a 7-0 run to take a 26-22 lead at the five minute mark. A trey by Gardner put the Red Devils back in front and Shelby Naab (Beecher City, Ill./HS) added two free throws to keep Eureka ahead. Naab made 5-of-7 at the line in the game en route to a career-high 16 points.
The contest featured the match up of two of the top forwards in the SLIAC. Eureka's Nicole Fisher (Canton, Ill./HS) and Fontbonne's Liz Sharpe-Taylor have combined for three of the first four Player of the Week Awards this season. However, fouls proved to be a buzz-kill as Sharpe-Taylor was limited to two free throws before fouling out in 16 minutes, while Fisher posted a typical 16 points, 12 rebound, five steal, two block performance. She had 10 boards in the second half alone helping EC to a 23-14 rebounding edge after halftime.
Gardner tied the game at 37 with her third three-pointer of the night, but the Griffins owned the next 10 minutes, outscoring Eureka 32-9 and taking a 69-48 lead with seven minutes remaining. Eureka held Fontbonne to 34.5 percent (10-29) from the field in the first half only to see the Griffins sink 13 of their first 19 attempts in the second stanza. But just as quickly, the Griffins went ice cold as the Red Devils held them without field goal for the final 7:50 of the game.
Eureka closed the game on a 18-3 rally, scoring the final 12 points of the contest. Gardner led EC with 17 points and four assists. In addition for her 16 points, Naab pulled down eight rebounds and chipped in three steals. Fisher and Naab combined for 10 offensive rebounds resulting in a 16-6 Eureka advantage in that category.
