EC senior scores 22 in 2nd half vs. defending champs

January 5, 2008

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Nicole Fisher (Canton, Ill./HS) was 10-of-12 from the field for 25 points and hauled in 10 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season, but Eureka College could neither shake the rust of a 22 day break nor the tough Maryville University Saints in an 82-50 defeat Saturday. Fisher, who tallied 22 points in the second half alone, moved to within five points of the top five on Eureka's career scoring list.

Maryville (7-3, 3-0 SLIAC), which has now won 63 consecutive St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference games, used a smothering defense to hold the Red Devils (1-8, 1-2 SLIAC) to 4-of-25 from the field for a
36-13 halftime lead.

Eureka got into gear in the second 20 minutes, making all seven free throw attempts, shooting 51.7 percent (15-for-29) overall and scoring 37 points. The Red Devils also secured a 21-12 rebounding advantage after intermission. Brandi Payne (Eureka, Ill./HS) and Shelby Naab (Beecher City, Ill./HS) helped fortify the effort on the boards with nine and seven rebounds respectively for the game.

The Saints made it tough of the Red Devils by sinking six out of 11 three-point attempts in the second half, including a stretch of four in a row. But, EC was still able to muster a 23-10 run to close the contest.

Eureka's next two games will be at home starting Monday, January 7 at 7:00 pm versus Robert Morris College of Springfield. The match up was originally scheduled to be part of the EC Classic on December 1, but had to be postponed due to weather.
