4 double digit scorers highlight game vs. Westminster
January 12, 2008
FULTON, Mo. Junior Nicole Ropp (Minonk, Ill./Fieldcrest) doubled her previous career-high with 14 points, including 12 in the second half of Eureka College's 62-52 defeat at Westminster College Saturday. Ropp was one of four players to score in double figures for the Red Devils, who nearly rallied back from a 15 point deficit and almost eight minute scoreless drought in the first half.
Eureka (1-11, 1-4 SLIAC) sprinted out to a 9-2 lead as Brittany Gardner (Mooresville, Ill./HS) tallied five of her 12 points on the day in the opening six minutes. However, the next 7:30 was owned by Westminster
Nicole Fisher (Canton, Ill./HS) helped keep EC within striking distance at halftime with 10 points and nine rebounds. Six points came in the last 3:35 before halftime as Eureka got within 32-20 at the break after trailing 27-11.
Ropp sank a three-pointer and Brandi Payne (Eureka, Ill./HS) added a lay in to begin the second half capping a 14-5 run by the Red Devils that brought them to within 32-25. Eureka was able to trim the margin to six on three occasions in the second half, but could get no closer thanks to the play of Heather Collums, who was a perfect 10-for-10 at the line after halftime and scored 24 points.
Ropp and Payne combined for 11 of Eureka's first 12 points of the period allowing EC to get within 38-32. Westminster then responded with an 8-1 burst to push the lead back up to 13. The Red Devils had yet another rally in them, though. Ropp chipped in five points to spark an 11-4 spurt that made the count 52-46 with 3:10 to go. But Westminster got a key basket off an offensive rebound and Collums drained six free throws the rest of the way to quash the Eureka comeback. Fisher corralled a game-high 14 rebounds and scored 12 points for her eighth double-double of her senior campaign. The Red Devils, who have been out-rebounded just once in their last eight games, gained a 37-32 edge on the boards. Payne finished with 10 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Eureka handed away a season-low 17 turnovers, but also shot a season-worst 31.3 percent (15-for-48).
Westminster shot 38.2 percent (21-for-55) from the field and 30 percent (8-for-27) from three-point range.
The Red Devils' next game will be at MacMurray College Wednesday, January 16 as part of a SLIAC doubleheader. The women's game will commence at 6:00 pm. The men's game is slated for 8:00 pm.
