Fisher, Payne record double-doubles at Greenville
GREENVILLE, Ill. — Two Red Devils recorded double-doubles in Eureka's 63-47 loss to Greenville College Wednesday night in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.
EC senior Brandi Payne (Eureka, Ill./HS) had her third double-double of the season and second in as many games versus Greenville (17-6, 11-3 SLIAC) with 10 points and a career-high 14 rebounds, but she could not help the Red Devils (6-17, 5-10 SLIAC) comeback from an 11-point halftime deficit. Nicole Fisher (Canton, Ill./HS) registered her sixth consecutive game in double figures in points and rebounds with 22 and 13 respectively.
Greenville used a 12-2 run in the first half to break open a tied game at 13-13. Eureka trailed only briefly over the opening eight minutes, but did not see the lead again after the initial Panthers' surge. The Red Devils rallied to get within 25-19 late in the half, but Greenville tallied the last five points to carry a 30-19 advantage into halftime.
Meredith Banal scored all 13 of her points for the game in the first half to lead Greenville. Nicole Fisher led EC with 10 points in the half despite the Red Devils being held to 29 percent (8-for-28) shooting.
Eureka pulled within nine early in the second frame only to see Greenville respond with a 9-1 spurt to take its largest edge of the night at 41-24 with a little over 16 minutes to play. But Eureka was able to keep the Panthers from scoring for almost five minutes as the Red Devils would go on to make a game of it. Four different players found the scoring column during a 10-0 rally that was capped off by a Fisher lay up with 11:40 remaining that pulled Eureka within 43-36.
A pair of Tricia Front triples put Greenville back ahead by 13 before Eureka again sliced the margin to single figures at 53-44 on a fast break lay up by Kim Downs (Kewanee, Ill./HS) with just over seven minutes to play. But EC would go without a field goal the rest of the way allowing the Panthers to score 10 of the game's final 13 points.
Eureka out-rebounded Greenville 44-34 led by the 27 combined between Payne and Fisher. Shelby Naab (Beecher City, Ill./HS) added six boards for the Red Devils, who led 13-2 in second chance points. EC shot 36 percent (19-for-53) from the field and 50 percent (8-for-16) at the free throw line.
Natalie Lappe led Greenville with 14 points and six assists. The Panthers committed just seven turnovers compared to Eureka's 19 en route to a 28-4 advantage in points off turnovers.
The Red Devils will play their final road contest of the season Saturday, February 23 at Webster University. The women's game is set for a 3:00 pm tip-off, which follows the men's portion of the SLIAC doubleheader at 1:00 pm. Eureka defeated the Gorloks 55-44 on January 19.
