Carroll takes battle of All-Central Region players

November 16, 2007

WAUKESHA, Wis. — The Eureka women's basketball team dropped its 2007-08 season opener to the host team at the Carroll College Jean Kilgour Memorial Tournament Friday night by the count of 83-46.

Preseason All-American Crystal Hoewisch scored 29 points to lead the Pioneers (1-0), who were picked to win the Midwest Conference this season. Carroll held Eureka (0-1) to one field goal in the first 11 minutes of the contest to take a 23-4 lead that would hold up throughout the game.

The Red Devils crept back to within 23-10 before Carroll went on an 8-1 run and en route to a halftime edge of 42-19.

Eureka showed some improvement after the intermission, playing the Pioneers almost even for the first 15 minutes of the second half. Nicole Fisher (Canton, Ill./HS) led EC with 23 points, 16 of which came after halftime. She is now 26 points shy of 1,000 for her career.

Brittany Gardner (Mooresville, Ind./HS) pitched in 13 points and three assists for Eureka. Fisher and Lisa Ghighi (Oglesby, Ill./LaSalle-Peru) tied for game-high honors with six rebounds each. The Red Devils shot 42.9 percent (18-42) from the field, a mark they bettered just seven times in 24 games last season.

Hoewisch was 12-for-16 from the field and added four assists and five steals. Carroll made seven three-pointers and shot 88.9 percent (16-18) from the foul line.

Eureka next plays in the consolation game of the tournament against Southwestern University (located in Georgetown, Texas) at 1:00 pm Saturday, Nov. 17. The Pirates were defeated by Wisconsin-La Crosse 42-26 in the opening game of the event.
