Bench keys Dubuque's 65-56 victory over Greenville, 2-0 mark at EC Classic

December 1, 2007

EUREKA, Ill. — The University of Dubuque held Greenville College off the scoreboard during a key three minute stretch late in the second half as the Spartans swung a 51-47 deficit around to a 56-51 lead en route to a 65-56 victory. Dubuque (5-2) finished with a perfect 2-0 mark in the Eureka College Classic, while Greenville (3-3) fell to 1-1.

Thanks to a strong Spantans' bench effort and 14 first half turnovers by the Panthers, Dubuque led for most of the opening frame before settling for a 29-25 edge at intermission. Greenville lauched its best attack early in the second half, taking control during a 13-2 run that gave the Panthers their largest lead at 40-34 with 13:19 remaining.

Dubuque did not get the lead back until the 4:30 mark as Erica Johnson converted one of Greenville's 27 turnovers into two points at the other end. Dubuque held the lead from there as Greenville managed just two more field goals the rest of the way, and the Spartans added to their total at the line.

Katelyn Herrman scored a game-high 15 points off the Dubuque bench, which outscored Greenville's reserves by the winning margin of nine points (27-18). Courtney Musser added 13 points and seven assists. Jennifer Bell helped the Spartans to a 39-29 advantage on the boards with eight rebounds. She also chipped in nine points.

The Panthers were led for the second day in a row by Hillary King. She tallied 13 points on a perfect 6-for-6 from the field as Greenville out-shot Dubuque 48.9 percent (23-for-47) to 36.1 percent (22-for-61). King was named to the All-EC Classic team. She was joined by Briana Nelson of Dubuque, who recorded eight points versus Greenville and 17 points against Eureka College a day earlier.

The second game on the day between Robert Morris Springfield and Eureka was postponed use to icy road conditions. The game will likely be made up later in the season. Brittany Gardner or Eureka and Lindsey Rogers of Robert Morris was also named to the All-EC Classic team.
