Greger, Knight lead Red Devils on day 1 of classic
Boxscore
Liz Greger (Petersburg, Ill./PORTA) scored 13 of her career-high total of 14 points in the second half of the Red Devils' 86-50 set back versus visiting Robert Morris-Springfield on Day 1 of the EC Classic. Eureka College stayed within reach into the second half until a 24-6 run tilted the game in the Eagles' favor for good.
Coming off the bench to play 22 minutes, Chantaivia Knight (Normal, Ill./University) had 10 points and 11 rebounds for her fourth double-double in five games to begin her EC career. Knight and Lisa Byard (Morton, Ill./HS) combined for 15 of Eureka's 21 first half points.
Robert Morris hit from three-point territory four times in a seven minute span to open up an early 18-5 advantage. The Eagles (7-2) made 6-of-11 from behind the arc in the first half.
Eureka (0-5) closed the gap to 18-10 following Byard's three-point play with nine minutes left before intermission. Robert Morris slowly added to the margin, with it increasing to as high as 16 points before Byard set the halftime score at 35-21 with a pair of free throws in the final minute.
The Red Devils twice got within 12 early in the second stanza. The last time was after Lindsey Crum's (Washington, Ill./HS) long two-pointer at the 18:12 mark that made the count 37-25. The Eagles would counter with the next eight points, however, and did not let EC get back into the game. Robert Morris amassed 51 second half points to put up the most points against Eureka in over a year.
Greger accounted for five of Eureka's 7-for-7 free throw shooting in the second half. She was 4-for-8 from the field to increase her home scoring average to over 10 per game. Knight led all players in the game with 11 boards. She converted all three of her offensive rebounds into baskets helping EC to a 14-7 edge in second chance points. Byard finished with nine points, three rebounds and two blocked shots. Other team leaders were Lauren Snopek (Metamora, Ill./HS), who had four assists and Kim Downs (Kewanee, Ill./HS), who swiped three steals.
Lindsey Rogers canned five out of 11 three-point attempts en route to a game-high 19 points. The Eagles recorded 26 assists on 32 made field goals led by nine off the hands of Jasmine Mack.
In the first game of the EC Classic, Carthage College ran out to a 14-0 lead, enjoyed a 39-24 rebounding advantage and defeated Greenville College 80-48. Greenville will take on Robert Morris-Springfield Saturday, December 6 at 2:00 pm in the first of three games at the Reagan Center. The Red Devils will then match up with Carthage at 4:00 pm. To cap the day's action, the Eureka men's team will host Fontbonne University for a 6:00 pm tip-off.
