stars steer red devils to holiday break

Boxscore

Liz Greger (Petersburg, Ill./PORTA) set a career-high in points for the second consecutive game, but this time it did not result in a Red Devils' win as Eureka College lost in non-conference play at Dominican University Sunday 75-53.

The game was the Red Devils' lone contest during a 25 day stretch. Eureka enters the holiday break just as it did last season at 1-7. Dominican improved to 4-1.

Jessica Salinas of Dominican scored all 13 of her first half points in the opening 10 minutes as the Stars jumped out to a 23-9 lead. Meanwhile, Greger accounted for 10 of Eureka's first 15 points to keep EC within striking distance. The Red Devils held Dominican to just one point over a five minute span to get back within 24-17 after Lauren Snopek's (Metamora, Ill./HS) basket with 5:17 left in the frame.

That would mark the end of Eureka's good fortune, however, as Dominican closed the half on a 14-4 run to go up 38-21 at the intermission. The Stars converted 50 percent (16-for-32) of their field goal attempts in the first half, while EC was held to 28 percent (9-for-32) despite Greger being 6-for-11.

The second half was played relatively evenly, with neither side mounting more than five consecutive points to advance their position. Facing a 17-point halftime deficit, that did not help the Red Devils' cause any, although they did improve their offensive attack.

Eureka shot 42 percent (10-24) after halftime and earned 21 trips to the foul line. Unfortunately, EC missed a total of 13 free throw attempts on the day, just one less than the home standing Stars shot.

Greger finished with 19 points and was also Eureka's leading rebounder with seven. Chantaivia Knight (Normal, Ill./University) reached double figures as well with 12 points off the bench. Snopek recorded nine points, three assists and two steals. Sarah Holdenrid (Mendota, Ill./HS) and Leesa Statler (Marietta, Ill./Bushnell-Prairie City) had five rebounds apiece. The Red Devils gave away a season low 18 turnovers.

Dominican was led by Lindsey Trent, who poured in 13 second half points for 22 in the game. Salinas had 18 points in 19 minutes.

The Red Devils will return to action Saturday, January 3 at 1:00 pm when they take on defending conference champion Maryville University in St. Louis.
