Blackburn Tops Eureka, 74-58

Box Score

EUREKA, Ill. – Eureka College sophomore forward Chantaivia Knight (Normal, Ill./University H.S.) recorded game-highs with 15 points and nine rebounds, but Blackburn held off a late Eureka rally for a 74-58 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory, Wednesday night at the Reagan Center.

The Red Devils (4-15, 1-10 SLIAC) and Beavers (10-10, 8-3 SLIAC) were evenly matched through most of the first half.  Blackburn’s Andrea Kleinsorge scored on a layup with 15:52 left to break a 6-6 tie and trigger an 18-10 Blackburn run for a 24-16 lead.  Eureka answered with a 9-4 run capped by a basket from sophomore forward Lisa Byard (Morton, Ill./Morton H.S.) to trim its deficit to 28-25 with 2:26 left, but Blackburn took a 35-26 lead into intermission, its largest lead of the half.

Blackburn took its first double-digit lead on its first possession of the second half when Shana Shepherd knocked down a three-point basket for a 38-26 cushion.  The Beavers would maintain the double-digit lead for the rest of the contest, building their advantage to as many as 23 points, 72-49, before Eureka finished the contest on a high note.  Knight scored on a layup with 2:27 left to ignite another 9-4 run to end the game.  The Red Devils also cranked up the defensive intensity in the final two minutes, forcing four Blackburn turnovers, but time ran out before Eureka could get any closer.

Byard finished with 14 points, while freshman guard Jaquie Flanagan (Washington, Ill./Washington H.S.) added nine points.  Senior guard Lauren Snopek (Metamora, Ill./Metamora H.S./Illinois Central) came off the bench to match a career-high with six rebounds.

The Red Devils will host Webster this Saturday at 1 p.m., the final game of a five-game homestand.
