Eureka Pulls Away to Rout MacMurray, 75-57
EUREKA, Ill. – Eureka College juniors Khassandrae Brown (East Peoria, Ill./East Peoria H.S./Kankakee) and Sara Hamilton (Washington, Ill./Washington H.S./Illinois Central) shared game-high honors with 20 points apiece, leading a group of four Eureka starters to score in double-figures in a 75-57 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference triumph over MacMurray, Saturday afternoon at the Reagan Center.
The two sides played a back-and-forth first half that included five ties and seven lead changes. Eureka (4-9, 2-5 SLIAC) took a 12-7 lead with 16:07 remaining after a layup from junior forward Lisa Byard (Morton, Ill./Morton H.S.) before the visitors scored 12 of the next 14 points to take their largest lead of the game, 19-14, on a jumper by LaToya Jones with 10:37 left. The Red Devils bounced back with a 16-5 run of their own and held a 30-24 lead with 4:28 left, their largest lead of the half.
MacMurray pushed back in front, 36-34, on a 3-point play by Whitney Wade with 17 seconds left before Eureka freshman Emilee Brown (East Peoria, Ill./East Peoria H.S.) hit a 3-pointer on Eureka’s ensuing possession for the seventh lead change of the first 20 minutes and a 37-36 halftime lead for the Red Devils.
Eureka scored the first 11 points of the second half to take its first double-digit lead of the game (48-36) and put the game away. MacMurray’s Kianna Hogan split a pair of free throws with 15:21 left in regulation to trim the Highlanders’ deficit to nine, 48-39, but the Red Devils answered with a basket from Khassandrae Brown and Eureka would lead by double-digits for the remainder of the contest.
The hosts led by as many as 20 points late when sophomore guard Jaquie Flanagan (Washington, Ill./Washington H.S.) connected on a 3-point basket for a 74-54 lead with 2:16 remaining. First-year Eureka head coach Taren Martin used 11 players in the win.
In addition to her game-high 20 points, Hamilton led all players with nine rebounds, six assists and 37 minutes played. Khassandrae Brown pulled down seven boards to go along with her 20 points, while Emilee Brown scored 12 points and gathered six rebounds. Freshman guard Kiley Bugaieski (Tremont, Ill./Tremont H.S.) earned her first career starting assignment and responded with 12 points in a career-high 29 minutes.
Byard made her 63rd consecutive start and finished the contest with six points and seven rebounds. Her first rebound of the game with 18:39 left in the first half was the 500th of her Eureka career, making her the first Red Devil to gather 500 career rebounds since Nicole Fisher (2004-08). Byard needs 23 rebounds to tie Dannette Gilmore (1984-88) for 10th place on the all-time Eureka rebounding list. Fisher holds the Eureka record with 892 boards.
Eureka will take a break from SLIAC play this Thursday when it hosts Lincoln Christian at 6 p.m. at the Reagan Center.
