Eureka Rally Falls Short Against Principia, 76-70

Box Score

EUREKA, Ill. – The Eureka College women’s basketball team received a career-high 25 points and 15 rebounds from sophomore forward Chantaivia Knight (Normal, Ill./University H.S.), but Principia was able to hold off a second half rally from the Red Devils and record a 76-70 win, Saturday afternoon at the Reagan Center.

Eureka started the contest strong, taking a 19-10 lead midway through the first half behind eight points from sophomore forward Lisa Byard (Morton, Ill./Morton H.S.).  Principia returned the favor, however, shooting 69.2 percent (9-for-13) from three-point range in the first 20 minutes and making each of its final six three-point attempts in the first half to take a 39-27 lead into halftime.

The Panthers took a 19-point lead, 53-34, after a pair of free throws from Emily Wheeler with 13:59 left in regulation.  The Red Devils responded with an 18-3 surge over the next six minutes to claw within four points, 56-52, with 7:59 to go.  Knight scored eight points and freshman guard Jaquie Flanagan (Washington, Ill./Washington H.S.) knocked down a pair of three-pointers during the run that was capped by a layup from senior guard Lauren Snopek (Metamora, Ill./Metamora H.S./Illinois Central).

Principia was able to push its lead back to double-digits with a 10-4 run of its own after Dani Carney’s three-pointer made the score 68-58 in favor of the visitors.  The Red Devils had one final run left, drawing within four points again after a three-pointer from Flanagan made it 74-70 with 10 seconds left, but Carney made two free throws with 2.1 seconds remaining to lock up the victory for Principia.

Byard scored 12 points and grabbed 12 rebounds before fouling out of the game with 1:04 left.    Flanagan finished with 11 points and Snopek was the fourth Red Devils to finish in double-figures with 10 points.

Eureka will host MacMurray this Wednesday at 6 p.m., the second of five consecutive home games for the Red Devils.
