Eureka Tops Concordia For Martin's first Win, 58-51
EUREKA, Ill. – Three Eureka College starters recorded double-doubles, including a game-high 18 points and 11 rebounds for junior guard Sara Hamilton (Washington, Ill./Washington H.S./Illinois Central), leading the Red Devils to a 58-51 non-conference victory over Concordia (Ill.), Tuesday night at the Reagan Center. The decision marked the first victory in the head coaching career of Eureka head coach Taren Martin.
Eureka raced out of the gate to an 8-2 lead behind a pair of layups from junior forward Khassandrae Brown (East Peoria, Ill./East Peoria H.S./Kankakee) in the first two minutes of the game. The Red Devils maintained that advantage for a large portion of the first half until Concordia’s Bobbie May knocked down a three-point basket for a 19-18 lead with 4:56 left before halftime. The two teams traded the lead two more times in the first half before heading into intermission tied at 25-25.
Hamilton drilled a triple on Eureka’s first possession of the second half and the Red Devils never trailed again. The three-pointer sparked an 18-5 Eureka run to start the second half. Freshman guard Emilee Brown (East Peoria, Ill./East Peoria H.S.) hit her only three-pointer of the game to cap the run and give the Red Devils their largest lead of the game, 43-30, with 10:15 left in regulation.
The Cougars slowly chipped away at their deficit over the next several minutes and climbed within four points (51-47) when Marche Smith made a pair of foul shots with 2:33 left. The Red Devils answered on their very next possession with a jumper from sophomore guard Jaquie Flanagan (Washington, Ill./Washington H.S.) and the lead wouldn’t dip below two possessions for the remainder of the contest.
Eureka junior forward Lisa Byard (Morton, Ill./Morton H.S.) had 14 points and 13 rebounds for her 17th career double-double before fouling out with 55 seconds left in the game. Khassandrae Brown delivered the Red Devils’ third double-double with 12 points and a game-high 17 rebounds.
The Red Devils held Smith, a D3hoops.com preseason All-American, to 16 points on 6-for-17 shooting. Emilee Brown did a solid job defensively on Smith and finished the contest with eight points in 37 minutes.
Eureka will return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 30, opening the 16-game St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schedule at the Reagan Center against Principia. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m.
