Red Devils Rally to Beat Greenville, 75-70
EUREKA, Ill. – Eureka College senior guard Lauren Snopek (Metamora, Ill./Metamora H.S./Illinois Central) drilled a three-pointer from the right wing with 19.9 seconds remaining, breaking a 70-70 tie and pushing the Red Devils to a 75-70 SLIAC win over Greenville, Thursday night at the Reagan Center.
Trailing 70-67 with 55 seconds remaining, Eureka (3-4, 1-1 SLIAC) sophomore forward Chantaivia Knight (Normal, Ill./University H.S.) successfully converted a three-point play to force a 70-70 tie. Greenville (3-4, 1-1 SLIAC) turned the ball over on the ensuing possession, setting up Snopek’s game-winning basket with 19.9 seconds remaining. Greenville’s Brittany Wolfe missed a potential game-tying three-pointer with 10 seconds left. Snopek was fouled on the ensuing Eureka possession and made two free throws with 5.1 seconds left to ice the victory.
The two teams were evenly matched early in the first half, as neither squad could maintain a lead larger than five points in the first 10 minutes. Snopek made a three-pointer with 10:46 left to start a 14-2 Eureka run for a 30-18 lead with 6:21 left in the first half. Greenville immediately responded with a run of its own, rattling off a 21-6 burst to end the half with a 39-36 lead.
Greenville scored the first six points of the second half to take its largest lead of the game (47-38) before the Red Devils stormed back. The hosts regained the lead for the first time since the 1:36 mark of the first half when freshman guard Jaquie Flanagan (Washington, Ill./Washington H.S.) gave the Red Devils a 50-49 advantage with a jumper with 14:36 left in regulation.
Greenville would tie the score seven times before taking the lead on a free throw from Linda Morris with 2:48 left to give the Panthers a 68-67 lead. Laura Hobbie made back-to-back foul shots with 1:05 left for a three-point lead before Knight tied the game at 70-70 with her three-point play. In all, the game featured nine ties and six lead changes.
Snopek and Knight scored 18 points each to lead a balanced Eureka effort. Knight pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds. Flanagan was 7-for-9 from the field for 14 points, while sophomore forward Lisa Byard (Morton, Ill./Morton H.S.) added 15 points in the win.
Eureka’s win snaps a five-game losing streak in the all-time series against Greenville. The Red Devils will return to action on Tuesday, Dec. 15 at home against Knox at 5:30 p.m.
