Red Devils Roll Past Mount Mary at EC Classic, 79-21

Box Score

EUREKA, Ill. – Eureka College sophomore forward Lisa Byard (Morton, Ill./Morton H.S.) scored a game-high 22 points, leading a group of five Red Devils to score in double-figures in a 79-21 rout of Mount Mary during the first night of the ninth annual Eureka College Classic, Friday night at the Reagan Center.

Eureka sophomore forward Chantaivia Knight (Normal, Ill./University H.S.) opened the scoring with a layup in the second minute of the game, triggering a 14-0 EC run to start the contest.  The Blue Angels didn’t score until Emily Barker’s jumper with 13:28 remaining in the first half.  Eureka carried a 33-13 advantage into halftime.

The Red Devils started the second half just as they started the game, scoring 25 straight points for a 58-13 lead before Mount Mary’s Shanae Payne made a free throw with 8:42 left in regulation.

The Eureka offense turned in a balanced performance in the victory.  Byard pulled collected 11 rebounds for a double-double, while Knight scored 11 points and had a career-high 17 rebounds.  Freshman guard Jaquie Flanagan (Washington, Ill./Washington H.S.) set new career-highs with 19 points and nine steals, the most thefts by a Red Devil since Kim Downs recorded 11 steals in a win at Lincoln Christian on Feb. 12, 2009.  Sophomore guard Rachel Parnau (Peotone, Ill./Peotone H.S.) came off the bench to score a career-high 10 points, while senior guard Lauren Snopek (Metamora, Ill./Metamora H.S./Illinois Central) added 14 points and a game-high nine assists.

As a team, Eureka shot a season-best 53.7 percent (36-for-67) from the field and forced a season-high 25 turnovers.  Payne led the Blue Angels with 12 points, as Mount Mary made only seven field goals during the contest and shot 12.7 percent (7-for-55).

In the opener, Robert Morris-Springfield held off a late Greenville rally for a 63-60 win over the Panthers.  Latoya Gipson scored 26 points to lead the Eagles.

The win pushes Eureka to 8-7 all-time at the EC Classic and snaps a four-game losing streak for the Red Devils in EC Classic games.  The two-day event will conclude Saturday at the Reagan Center.  Mount Mary will play Greenville at 2 p.m. before Eureka hosts Robert Morris at 4 p.m.  The Eureka College men’s basketball team will follow the Classic with a 7 p.m. non-conference game against Millikin at the Reagan Center.
