Spalding Finishes Strong, Beats Eureka, 77-62
EUREKA, Ill. – All five Eureka College starters scored in double-figures in Saturday’s St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against Spalding, but the visiting Golden Eagles overcame a six-point deficit in the second half to beat the Red Devils, 77-62, at the Reagan Center.
Playing at home for the first time since Dec. 15, the Red Devils took their first lead at the 16:35 mark of the first half and led by as many as nine points after a basket from sophomore guard Kristen Garst (Peoria, Ill./Illini Bluffs H.S./Bethel) pushed Eureka in front, 25-16. Spalding closed the gap before the end of half, however, using an 18-10 run over the final six minutes to trail only 35-34 at halftime.
Eureka recovered to push its lead back to six, 50-44, after another field goal from Garst with 12:32 left in regulation, but Spalding controlled the contest from that moment forward. The Golden Eagles scored nine unanswered points and took the lead for good when Kelly Harrod’s layup gave Spalding a 52-50 advantage with 9:48 to go. Spalding slowly pulled away, outscoring the hosts 27-12 over the final 10 minutes of the contest. The final 15-point margin of victory was Spalding’s largest advantage of the game.
Senior Lauren Snopek (Metamora, Ill./Metamora H.S./Illinois Central) and sophomore Lisa Byard (Morton, Ill./Morton H.S.) scored 13 points apiece to lead the Eureka offense. Snopek added a game-high six assists, the third time this season she’s dished out at least six helpers in a single contest. Sophomore forward Chantaivia Knight (Normal, Ill./University H.S.) continued to control the boards in conference play, collecting a game-high 13 rebounds to improve her season average to a league-best 11.3 per game. She added 10 points on Saturday for her sixth double-double of the campaign.
The Golden Eagles substituted frequently, as seven different players logged at least 20 minutes with no individual playing more than 26 minutes. Jackie Skaggs scored a game-high 21 points in the win.
Eureka will visit Lincoln Christian this Wednesday for a non-conference clash at 5 p.m. in Lincoln, Ill.
