Westminster Downs Eureka, 65-47
EUREKA, Ill. – Eureka College senior guard Lauren Snopek (Metamora, Ill./Metamora H.S./Illinois Central) poured in a team-high 16 points in the final home game of her Eureka College career, but visiting Westminster was able to pull away for a 65-47 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over the Red Devils, Saturday afternoon at the Reagan Center.
The Blue Jays (12-10, 10-5 SLIAC) used a 9-2 run to close the first half, turning a two-point lead into a 25-16 advantage at intermission. Despite the nine-point deficit, the Eureka defense held Westminster to 25 points in the first half, the lowest total by a league opponent since Webster scored just 24 points in the first half against Eureka on Jan. 6. Freshman Lindsey Hinshaw (Normal, Ill./Normal West H.S.) scored four points to lead a balanced Eureka offense in the first half.
Westminster struggled to add to its lead early in the second half, but eventually pushed its advantage to 14 points, 41-27, after a layup from Liz Klaffenbach with 11:57 left in regulation. The Red Devils (6-18, 2-13 SLIAC) answered with back-to-back three-point baskets from Snopek and sophomore guard Kristen Garst (Peoria, Ill./Illini Bluffs H.S./Bethel) to cut their deficit to eight points, 41-33, the smallest deficit for Eureka since the 18:40 mark of the second half.
The visitors answered with a basket from Markie England on their next possession, and Westminster was able to maintain a double-digit lead for the remainder of the contest. Eureka fought back to get within 12 points, 51-39, as late as the 4:24 mark of the second half, but Westminster ended the game on a 14-8 run to secure its 10th league win of the season.
Snopek knocked down three three-point baskets to match a single-game career-high and moved into eighth place on the all-time Eureka list with 47 career treys. She was the only Red Devil to score in double-figures with 16 points and was followed by Garst with nine. Five different Red Devils grabbed four rebounds to share the team lead.
Eureka will close the 2009-10 season this Tuesday, visiting Greenville at 6 p.m. Eureka downed the Panthers, 75-70, on Dec. 10 at the Reagan Center.
