Women's Basketball Nears 600 Community Service Hours

Jaquie Flanagan

EUREKA, Ill. – The Eureka College women’s basketball team is nearing the 600-hour mark for community service.  Within the last 12 months, the women’s basketball student-athletes have donated their time to nearly a dozen different events in Eureka and surrounding communities.

Since the summer of 2010, the Red Devils have compiled 593 hours of community service.  In that time, the Red Devils have donated their time and efforts at the community’s annual Reagan Festival, Maple Lawn Homes and the Angel Tree Party for area youths hosted by Eureka College.  Many of the student-athletes participated in all three of the youth basketball camps hosted at the Reagan Center and have joined area youths during recess at local elementary schools.

Additionally, the Eureka women’s basketball student-athletes have regularly bagged groceries at local markets and worked in the concession area at O’Brien Field during Peoria Chiefs games to raise funds for the Red Devils’ trip to Las Vegas, Nev. in December.

“I am very proud of how hard the girls have worked this year and the community service hours they have put in on their free time,” second-year head coach Taren Martin said.  “Giving back to the community is very important to us and we hope to continue to help out in any ways we can.  It is not easy to be a student-athlete but these girls have shown that you can do anything as long as you have balance in your life.

In addition their work in the community, Martin also spoke of the Red Devils’ rapid improvement in the classroom.  More than half of the women’s basketball roster qualified for Eureka’s Spring 2011 A.D. Honor Roll.

“The girls broke some records on the basketball court last season (109 3-pointers), raised their team grade point average from a 2.7 to a 3.3 and have put in over 500 community service hours.  This is a great testament to them and how much pride they have in themselves and Eureka College.”

The Red Devils are scheduled to open their 37th season of competition against Robert Morris-Springfield on Nov. 15 at the Reagan Center.  Eureka is scheduled to play 24 games in 2011-12, including a pair of contests at the second annual D3hoops.com Classic at the South Point Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nev. on Dec. 27 and Dec. 29.
