Zastrow, Red Devils win season opener with shutout
Boxscore
EUREKA — The Eureka women's soccer team matched its all-time record of 2-0 in home openers with a 2-0 shutout of Franklin College Saturday afternoon. The victory is the Red Devils' third straight at home dating back to last season.
Sophomore GraceAnn Zastrow (N. Freedom, Wis./Reedsburg), who got her first collegiate start at goalkeeper, wasted no time collecting her first shutout. She saw 21 shots taken by Franklin, making eight saves along the way.
The Grizzlies out-shot Eureka 21-19 in the match, but were unable to get many clean attempts on the EC goal due to the relentless Red Devils defense. Not satisfied with helping her team blank the opponent, a main cog in the Eureka defensive effort, Jenna Werking (Peoria, Ill./Peoria Christian) was credited with the game winning goal in the 43rd minute as she blasted a shot off a Franklin defender and goalie from some 30 yards out.
After taking the halftime break with a 1-0 advantage, the Red Devils padded their lead just over nine minutes into the second frame when Kate Huizinga (Downers Grove, Ill./South) found the back of the net off a loose ball in the goalie box. Megan Waggoner (Winnebago, Ill./HS) created the scoring chance with a nice run toward the net and earned the only assist of the game after her initial shot was deflected by the goalkeeper.
The Red Devils will next play Monday, Sept. 1 at 2:00 pm as part of a non-conference doubleheader at Knox College. The men's game is slated to begin at 4:00 pm.
