Zapped: EC tops Blackburn 5-2 with Zapushek hat trick

Boxscore

The Eureka College women's soccer team won for the first time in conference play Wednesday, defeating Blackburn College 5-2 on the road. The win marked the third straight for the Red Devils over their conference rivals from Carlinville.

KT Zapushek (Metamora, Ill./HS) led the Maroon and Gold charge, as she needed just 22:13 to pocket her second career hat trick. She now has eight goals on the season. Three different Red Devils (5-5, 1-2 SLIAC) were credited with assists on the Zapushek tallies: Kate Huizinga (Downers Grove, Ill./South), Megan Waggoner (Winnebago, Ill./HS) and GraceAnn Zastrow (North Freedom, Wis./Reedsburg).

Zapushek got Eureka off to a fast start, scoring just 28 seconds into the match. She then tacked on two more roughly 11 minutes apart.

Katie Porter got Blackburn (0-6, 0-1 SLIAC) on the scoreboard in the 38th minute, but the Red Devils, who led 29-12 in shots and 22-10 in shots on goal, still enjoyed a 3-1 advantage at halftime.

Huizinga went on to net a pair of goals in the second half giving her 10 for the season, matching her total from last year. She scored an unassisted goal in the 54th minute for a 4-1 EC lead, then just seven seconds after Blackburn had gotten back within 4-2, gave her squad a three goal lead back after taking a feed from Amy Scammahorn (Decatur, Ill./Warrensburg-Latham).

The final 29 minutes were played to a scoreless draw leaving Eureka ahead 5-2 at the final gun. Kelsey Baruzzini (Metamora, Ill./HS) led EC with five shots (all on goal) toward Eureka season-highs in both shots and shots on goal. Huizinga, Waggoner and Zapushek added four each. Geanna Hiller (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) stopped eight Blackburn shots in picking up her second win as EC goalkeeper.

Eureka will play its next two matches at home starting at 1:00 pm, Saturday, Sept. 27 against non-conference opponent Robert Morris-Lake County. The men's game will follow at 3:00 pm.
