Huizinga, red devils sink highlanders with late comeback

Boxscore

The Eureka women's soccer team rallied back with two unanswered goals in less than four minutes for a 3-2 triumph over MacMurray College. It was the Red Devils' third consecutive win.

Kate Huizinga (Downers Grove, Ill./South) contributed in all three Eureka (7-5, 2-2 SLIAC) tallies. Leading off, she booted in the only goal of the first half just over 10 minutes into the affair as a Megan Waggoner (Winnebago, Ill./HS) cross landed right on Huizinga's foot as she ran in toward the left corner of the MacMurray (1-8-1, 0-5-0 SLIAC) goal.

The Red Devils played with a brisk wind at their backs in the first half, resulting in a 13-4 edge in shots and a 1-0 lead at the halftime break.

Eureka increased its shot total in the second half, but so did the Highlanders, who moved ahead in the match 2-1. Miracle Bell launched a well placed shot to the upper right corner of the goal after a Eureka foul, then Nora Nordike moved MacMurray in front with 20:02 remaining.

The Highlander challenge was matched promptly by a resurgent Eureka attack as the Red Devils scored on their next two shots to gain back the lead. Meghan Campbell (Oliver Branch, Miss./HS) threaded a pass through a host of defenders to Huizinga, who beat the keeper for the second time on the day in the 73rd minute. Then just 3:45 later, KT Zapushek (Metamora, Ill./HS) ended an extended EC possession by one-timing a long Huizinga cross into the goal for the game-winner.

Eureka limited MacMurray to just one corner kick and one shot, which was saved by EC goalkeeper GraceAnn Zastrow (N. Freedom, Wis./Reedsburg) over the final 14 minutes to preserve the lead. The Red Devils out-shot MacMurray 30-11 on the day led by Huizinga with 12. Nine different EC players recorded shots.

Eureka will next play a non-conference match at Robert Morris-Springfield Saturday, October 4 starting at 1:00 pm. The Red Devils will then return home for a three-game homestand next week.
