Zapushek records 4th consecutive game-winner

Boxscore

Eureka College set a new program record with its fourth consecutive win, topping Robert Morris-Springfield 2-1 on the road Saturday. The Red Devils also surpassed their win total from last season, improving to 8-5 on the year with seven regular season games left to contest.

Eureka controlled most of the match, but needed a second half penalty kick by KT Zapushek (Metamora, Ill./HS) to overtake a scrappy Eagles (3-6-1) side, which defeated EC 4-2 in 2007.

Although EC lost its leading scorer, Kate Huizinga (Downers Grove, Ill./South), early in the game after a collision with the Robert Morris keeper, the Red Devils had several players step up on the offensive end, especially Amy Scammahorn (Decatur, Ill./Warrensburg-Latham). She kicked in the lone goal of the opening frame off an assist from Zapushek with 13:26 remaining before halftime.

The Red Devils enjoyed a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal in the first half, then increased the margin to 5-1 after halftime. However, the Eagles only shot on frame landed in the EC net, tying the score at 1-1 in the 59th minute.

Both sides increased their intensity as the clock ticked down and the score remained deadlocked. Finally, the rough play proved to be the Eagles' undoing as Zapushek was awarded a penalty kick with 16:08 to play. She made Robert Morris pay with her 11th goal of the year and EC was able to keep the ball away from its end for most of the remaining time to secure victory.

Zapushek finished with a game-high seven shots, followed by Kristina Bayes (Belvidere, Ill./HS) for Eureka with five, including three on goal. Eureka doubled the Eagles in shots (20-10) and gained a 10-3 edge in shots on goal. The Red Devils are now 8-1 when scoring two or more goals in a game.

Eureka has three homes games next week, starting Monday, October 6 at 2:00 pm versus Monmouth College. This match up was originally slated to be played September 4, but was postponed due to heavy rain.
