Maryville proves un-Saintly guest with 5-goal 2nd half attack

Boxscore

The Red Devils' Jenna Werking (Peoria, Ill./Peoria Christian) tallied her third goal of the season off a long pass from KT Zapushek (Metamora, Ill./HS) in Eureka's 7-1 loss to visiting Maryville University.

Eureka (8-7) played conservatively in the opening half leading to a scoreless tie for over 28 minutes to begin the contest. After misfiring on their first 10 shots, the Saints (5-8-1) got on the board in the 29th minute as Amy Klein put one in the goal. Maryville extended its lead to 2-0 with 7:31 to play in the half after a long pass from midfield and a goal by Caroline Jaycox.

Making her first start at goalkeeper for EC, Zapushek made six saves to keep her squad within 2-0 at intermission. She then switched roles with GraceAnn Zastrow (N. Freedom, Wis./Reedsburg) in the second half. In the 64th minute, she lofted a long pass near the Maryville goal after a Saints foul, which was directed on frame and into the net by Werking.

Zastrow stopped seven Maryville shots, but the Saints' on-rushing attack after halftime could not be slowed. Maryville added three goals in the first 6:42 of the second half, building a 5-0 cushion before the Red Devils could get on the board. After Eureka climbed to within 5-1, Amber Hacker capped the scoring with a pair of goals in the 72nd minute.

The Red Devils had been shutout by Maryville in two previous meetings, including a 3-0 decision earlier this season on September 20.

Eureka next returns to SLIAC action versus Webster University Saturday, October 11 at 1:00 pm in the finale of a three-match homestand.
