Women’s Soccer Blanked at Hanover, 4-0
HANOVER, Ind. – Playing in its first match of the 2009 season, the Eureka College women’s soccer team dropped a 4-0 decision at Hanover, Saturday afternoon at the L.S. Ayres Soccer Complex.
The hosts struck first for an early 1-0 lead on Lindsey Jump’s unassisted goal in the 28th minute. Olivia Selm scored moments later in the 32nd minute, giving the Panthers a 2-0 lead they would take into the break.
Eureka held its deficit at 2-0 for a large portion of the second half before Hanover pulled away with a pair of goals in the final four minutes of the match. Blaine Bishop made it 3-0 with an 87th minute tally, and Christa Hurak added another just 91 seconds later to set the final score at 4-0.
The Red Devils struggled offensively during the contest, as the hosts owned a 33-2 advantage in shots. Midfielders Megan Waggoner (Winnebago, Ill./Winnebago H.S.) and K.T. Zapushek (Metamora, Ill./Metamora H.S.) were the only two players to attempt a shot, and only Zapushek’s attempt was a shot on goal.
Freshman Sami Williamson (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central H.S.) played the first 69 minutes in net for EC, stopping 10 shots on goal and allowing two goals. Classmate Lindsay Coffey (Pekin, Ill./Pekin H.S.) played the final 21 minutes between the pipes.
Eureka will have approximately 24 hours of rest before returning to the pitch on Sunday for a 3 p.m. match at Franklin.
