Red Devils Bounce Franklin in Overtime, 2-1

Box score>

FRANKLIN, Ind. – Eureka College senior forward Katie Huizinga (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South H.S.) scored an unassisted goal in the 93rd minute and freshman goalkeeper Sami Williamson (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central H.S.) made 12 saves, sending the Red Devils to a 2-1 overtime victory at Franklin, Sunday afternoon.

Huizinga broke free from the Franklin defense for a breakaway and sent her left-footed blast from 18 yards out past Franklin goalkeeper Amanda Welches.  The goal was Huizinga’s first of the season.  Following Eureka’s season-opening 4-0 loss at Hanover on Saturday, Huizinga’s strike was just the second tally of the two-match weekend trip for the Red Devils.

Trailing 1-0, senior Amy Scammahorn (Decatur, Ill./Warrensburg-Lathan H.S.) scored Eureka’s first goal of the season in the 52nd minute to force a 1-1 tie.  Franklin (1-1-0) opened the scoring with a goal from Natalie Downs in the 15th minute.

Williamson was outstanding in net for the Red Devils, stopping all but one of the 13 shots on goal fired by the Grizzlies.  Franklin held a 32-9 advantage in shots.

Eureka returns to the pitch this Wednesday at Traister Field, hosting Knox at 2 p.m. in the 2009 home opener.
