Eureka Lands Three on All-SLIAC Second Team

EUREKA, Ill. – Eureka College senior women’s soccer players Katie Huizinga (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South H.S.) and K.T. Zapushek (Peoria, Ill./Metamora H.S.) joined sophomore Kelsey Baruzzini (Metamora, Ill./Metamora H.S.) as members of the All-SLIAC Second Team, the league announced Saturday.  Huizinga and Zapushek are repeat Second Team honorees.

Huizinga paced the Eureka offense with a team-high 12 goals in 2009.  She started the season on a high note, scoring the golden goal in each of Eureka’s back-to-back 2-1 overtime victories over Franklin and Knox in early September.  In all, Huizinga scored in nine of Eureka’s 18 matches during the season and matched her own single-game Eureka goal-scoring record with four goals in a 6-1 SLIAC win at Spalding on Oct. 24.  She finished her three-year career with a school-record 39 goals.

Another three-year player, Zapushek earned Second Team honors after a solid season at the midfield position.  Eureka’s all-time assists leader with 19, Zapushek led the Red Devils with four helpers this season in addition to her 11 goals.  She scored nine of her 11 goals during a seven-game stretch midway through the season and netted three goals against Greenville on Oct. 27, her final game played at Traister Field.  She leaves the program as the all-time leader in points (91), shots (200) and successful penalty kicks (4).  Zapushek and Huizinga share the school record with eight game-winning goals apiece.

Baruzzini is a first-time recipient of postseason honors from the league after anchoring Eureka’s defensive back line this season.  Eureka allowed one goal or less on five different occasions during the season and recorded the fourth shutout in program history with a 3-0 win over Blackburn on Oct. 17.  She also added some offense, scoring her only goal of the season in a 2-1 overtime victory over Knox on Sept. 9.

The Red Devils finished the 2009 season with a 6-13-0 record, including a 3-5-0 mark in SLIAC play.
