Greenville Scores 9-5 Win Over Eureka
EUREKA, Ill. – The Eureka College women’s soccer team turned in its best offensive output at Traister Field this season with five goals, but Greenville’s Mindy Siebert scored six goals of her own to lead the Panthers in a 9-5 win over the Red Devils, Tuesday afternoon. Eureka senior midfielder K.T. Zapushek (Metamora, Ill./Metamora H.S.) recorded a hat trick to lead Eureka in her final game at Traister Field.
The game was scoreless through the first 10 minutes before Greenville’s Nikki Ziegemeier triggered a flurry of offense with her 11th minute goal for a 1-0 lead. Eureka senior forward Katie Huizinga (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South H.S.) was quick to respond, taking a pass from Zapushek and driving home her 11th goal of the season. She has now found the back of the net in four straight games and extended her Eureka career goal-scoring record to 38.
Siebert scored three times during the first half to drive the Greenville attack, but Zapushek mixed in goals in the 26th minute and the 41st minute to keep the Red Devils within striking distance. The Panthers held a 4-3 lead at the break.
Siebert scored for the fourth time just 85 seconds into the second half, but Zapushek matched her again with an unassisted blast in the 48th minute. Eureka freshman Katie McLaughlin (Eureka, Ill./Eureka H.S.) followed with her first career goal to force a 5-5 tie with 36:05 remaining.
The visitors put the game away with four goals in the final 30 minutes for the 9-5 win. Siebert scored her final two goals of the day during a 40-second span in the 61st minute. Jackie Sievert and Anna Bailie provided more insurance with goals in the final 10 minutes of the game.
The five goals scored is the highest total recorded by Eureka at home this season, topping the previous best of three set Oct. 17 in a 3-0 win over Blackburn. The 14 combined goals scored ties an all-time Eureka record set earlier this season in a loss to Illinois Wesleyan on Sept. 15.
While Greenville is a league opponent, Tuesday’s outcome will not be count toward the SLIAC standings. The first match between the two squads played Sept. 26 at Greenville does count, as Eureka will not play every league opponent twice this season. The Red Devils will return to the pitch this Thursday at Webster at 2 p.m. The game against the Gorloks was originally scheduled to be played Oct. 10, but was postponed due to heavy rainfall.
