Greenville Uses Late Surge to Beat Red Devils, 4-0
GREENVILLE, Ill. – Eureka College freshman goalkeeper Sami Williamson (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central H.S.) set a new career-best with 15 saves, but Greenville broke open a 1-0 halftime lead with three second half goals on its way to a 4-0 SLIAC win over the Red Devils, Saturday afternoon.
The host Panthers (7-2-0, 1-0-0 SLIAC) jumped in front 1-0 in the 15th minute after an own goal from the Red Devils, the only scoring of the first half. Greenville’s Jackie Sievert provided breathing room for Greenville when her shot in the 60th minute beat Williamson for a 2-0 lead. Rachel Zahniser and Nikki Ziegemeier added goals later in the half to put the game away.
Greenville held a 35-3 advantage in shots over Eureka (2-7-0, 0-1-0 SLIAC). Junior midfielder Megan Waggoner (Winnebago, Ill./Winnebago H.S.) was the only Eureka player to put a shot on goal during the game. Lauren Beard and Jenny Suszek combined to record the shutout in net for the Panthers.
The Red Devils will return to the pitch this Tuesday for a SLIAC match at MacMurray. Kickoff against the Highlanders is scheduled for 1 p.m.
