Huizinga Nets Golden Goal in 2-1 win over knox

Box Score

EUREKA, Ill. – Three days removed from scoring the game-winning goal in Eureka’s 2-1 overtime win at Franklin on Sunday, Eureka College senior forward Katie Huizinga (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South H.S.) did it again on Wednesday when her 99th minute shot found the back of the net to give the Red Devils a 2-1 overtime victory over Knox at Traister Field.

Huizinga took an excellent pass from senior K.T. Zapushek (Metamora, Ill./Metamora H.S.) and found herself one-on-one with Knox goalkeeper Alex Rauland inside the box.  Her shot hit the back of net, giving Eureka’s its second consecutive overtime victory.

The Prairie Fire (0-3-0) held a 14-9 advantage in shots during the first half, but Eureka (2-1-0) made the most of its opportunities early on.  Sophomore Kelsey Baruzzini (Metamora, Ill./Metamora H.S.) scored her first goal of the season in the 30th minute, receiving a pass from senior Amy Scammahorn (Decatur, Ill./Warrensburg-Latham H.S.) through traffic in the box and putting a shot past Rauland.

Eureka took the 1-0 lead into halftime but the visitors quickly found the equalizer less than five minutes into the second half when Arielle Dorman dribbled her way through traffic and sent a right-footed blast past EC freshman goalkeeper Sami Williamson (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central H.S.) for a 1-1 tie.  The two teams traded chances throughout the remainder of regulation, but neither side could convert to avoid overtime.  Eureka outshot Knox 11-6 in the second half and 7-4 in overtime, finishing the match with a 27-24 advantage over the Prairie Fire.

Williamson made nine saves for the Red Devils to record her second collegiate win, allowing only the goal from Dorman.  Rauland played well in net for the visitors, turning aside 12 shots on goal from the Red Devils, but took the loss.

The Red Devils will play their second of three consecutive home matches this Saturday when Coe visits for a 1 p.m. kickoff at Traister Field.
