Illinois College Beats Women's Soccer, 4-2

Box Score

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – Eureka College senior forward Katie Huizinga (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South H.S.) extended her all-time Eureka goal-scoring record with a 17th minute strike in Thursday's non-conference match at Illinois College, but the Lady Blues scored two goals in each half to beat the Red Devils, 4-2.

Illinois College’s (3-12-1) Anna Zimmer took a pass from Jennifer Henson and put a shot past Eureka (5-10-0) freshman goalkeeper Lindsay Coffey (Pekin, Ill./Pekin H.S.) to give the hosts a brief lead in the 16th minute.  Huizinga scored her sixth goal of the season and 32nd goal of her career on an unassisted strike just 16 seconds later to tie the game at 1-1.

Stacy Bergen (23rd minute) and Shaina Conwell (46th minute) delivered goals for the Lady Blues for a 3-1 lead before Eureka senior midfielder Amy Scammahorn (Decatur, Ill./Warrensburg-Latham H.S.) scored her third goal of the season with 13:39 remaining to draw the Red Devils within one at 3-2.  The hosts put the match away moments later in the 82nd minute when Candy Norville scored on an assist from Bergen.

Coffey allowed all four goals but did make a career-high 11 saves, easily topping her previous career-best of six set last month against Illinois Wesleyan.  Sophomore midfielder Kristina Bayes (Belvidere, Ill./Belvidere H.S.) joined Huizinga and Scammahorn as players to put a shot on goal when her 37th minute shot was stopped by Illinois College goalkeeper Courtney Mersinger.

The Red Devils will play their second of back-to-back road games when they visit new SLIAC foe Spalding on Saturday.  Kickoff in Louisville, Ky. is scheduled for 2 p.m.
