Late Westminster Goal Beats Red Devils, 3-2

Box Score

EUREKA, Ill. – Westminster senior midfielder Lyndsey Bittle headed home a pass from sophomore teammate Courtney Luebbert after a restart from midfield with just 9:26 remaining in regulation, giving the Blue Jays a 3-2 SLIAC win over Eureka College at Traister Field, Monday afternoon.

With time winding down in a 2-2 tie, Eureka (3-9-0, 1-3-0 SLIAC) was called for a foul after senior K.T. Zapushek (Metamora, Ill./Metamora H.S.) got tangled up with a Westminster (2-6-0, 2-1-0 SLIAC) defender near midfield.  With both players temporarily down with injuries, the Blue Jays took advantage of confusion on the ensuing restart, setting up a play in the middle of the box that allowed Bittle to redirect Luebbert’s pass past EC freshman goalkeeper Lindsay Coffey (Pekin, Ill./Pekin H.S.) for the game-winning goal in the 81st minute.

The Red Devils appeared to tie the game 90 seconds later on a goal from freshman Katie McLaughlin (Eureka, Ill./Eureka H.S.), but Eureka was whistled for being offside moments before the shot bounced into the net.  Westminster held off the Red Devils for the remaining moments to capture its second league win.

Zapushek scored both Eureka goals, including a blast from the top of the box on a free kick in the 21st minute.  She added another unassisted tally early in the second half, beating Westminster keeper Courtney Howe in the 51st minute to force a 2-2 tie.  Luebbert and Katie Denning scored for Westminster early to give the Blue Jays a 2-0 advantage just 12:47 into the contest.

Coffey made three saves in the second half after relieving freshman teammate Sami Williamson (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central H.S.).  Howe made a game-high five saves for the Blue Jays.

Eureka will return to the pitch this Thursday for a 1 p.m. SLIAC match against Spalding.
